• Study says China earthquake a once in 4,000 years event that ruptured multiple faults - September 27, 2009
| BEIJING ¡ª China's devastating earthquake last year that left some 90,000 people dead or missing was caused by a geological event that occurs about once every 4,000 years, a study led by Chinese researchers said Sunday. Researchers said the 7.9-magnitude quake was caused by the breaking of solid rock separating Michael Jordan Shoes major fault segments, allowing the quake to cascade along multiple faults. Such rock barriers stop the vast majority of quakes, limiting their intensity. "You really have to accumulate enough elastic energy to have them rupture through ¡ª but once rupture starts, it would rupture a series of barriers to get a cascade style." • Baucus Plans Changes to Health Bill to Win Over Key Lawmakers - September 22, 2009
| Less than a week after he unveiled his health-care reform bill to mixed, even grumbling reviews, Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) is preparing major revisions to it, to satisfy Democrats and the lone Republican yet to announce her vote on the measure, Sen. Olympia J. Snowe of Maine. As expected, lawmakers Air Jordan 1 have their own ideas for improving Baucus's proposal, and have submitted 564 amendments for consideration this week by the Finance Committee. Many of the amendments focus on making insurance more affordable for those who would be forced to buy policies under the plan, on modifying or eliminating Baucus's proposed sources of financing, and on protecting Medicare beneficiaries from a laundry list of proposed spending cuts. Baucus is looking at making more middle-income families eligible for federal insurance subsidies. The House bill sets that cap at 12 percent, and a source close to the discussion said Baucus could go to 12 percent or lower. Megan's body makes for a perky pinup, but even her boy-fans can do simple arithmetic. No, Meatballs made the big news; but it wasn't unequivocally good news. Abroad, that prehistoric comedy is even more mammoth. Sony, the distributor of Meatballs, would dearly love to join Disney-Pixar, DreamWorks and Fox-Blue Sky as a studio with a fat annual annuity from CGI features. But the numbers for Meatballs, while dominant in a slow Sept. week, aren't likely to vault it to the top of the cartoon class. The movie's gross should end up somewhere between that of its previous two animation efforts: the OK Open Season (2006) and the disappointing Surf's Up (2007). Having earned an impressive A- from CinemaScore, and with no family-movie challenge until the 3-D releases of the Pixar classics Toy Story and Toy Story 2, the Meatballs movie has a chance to cook up some good numbers. But Sony spent a lot to make a bit. Meatballs cost about $100 million to produce, not including prints and advertising, as opposed to $22 million Air Jordan 21 for The Informant!, $18 million for Love Happens and $16 million for Jennifer's Body. Those three films were in effect playing a different game ¡ª small ball ¡ª in the same park. Autumn is small-ball season at the movies. There's a certain kooky, kinky fun to be had with "Jennifer's Body," a fem-rage take on Air Jordan Shoes campy horror comedy. Megan Fox makes a subversive plaything of her smokin' hottie persona as Jennifer Check, a high school queen bee who, after an ugly encounter with a van full of rock musicians, becomes a raging succubus with a taste for Type B (for Boy) blood. View Only Top Items in This Story "Jennifer's Body" was written by Diablo Cody, who won an Oscar for her quippy "Juno" script, and viewers can expect the same pun-very-much-intended glibness here, with nonstop references to brand names from Monistat to Bowflex. It's a style that just about wore out its welcome in the earlier film; here Cody's compulsive cuteness is particularly Michael Jordan Shoes cloying and mannered. Tonally, "Jennifer's Body" is a giddy conglomeration of John Carpenter-era horror and "Scream"-y sarcasm. Viewers can never tell whether they're meant to laugh, cry or barf.
"Jennifer's Body" pivots around the friendship of the title character and her BFF, the blond, bookish Air Jordan 1 girl Needy (get it?), who twigs to Jennifer's psycho-weirdness long before anyone else. (Needy is played by Amanda Seyfried of "Mamma Mia!" fame.) But really, "Jennifer's Body" is about one thing and one thing only: Megan Fox's body, which director Karyn Kusama photographs fully exploiting Fox's fabled sexiness, although coyly withholding the frontal view that her young male "Transformers" fans are Air Yeezy New style doubtless panting for. Compared with her vacant presence in gadget movies that ask little more of her than baring her cleavage over a car hood, Fox's turn in "Jennifer's Body" at least gives her something more spiky to work with, even if it's in the service of instantly disposable pulp.
Still, the movie introduces a little rrriot grrrl-y feminism to a genre that for too long has been predicated on female victimization. Kusama ("Girlfight") handles the structural imperatives with solid timing and occasional panache. And between all the compulsive punning and look-at-me snarkitude, Cody manages to create moments of genuine humor. "Jennifer's evil," Needy tells her Air Jordan 12 boyfriend, Chip (Johnny Simmons), at one point, adding, "I mean she's actually evil, not high school evil." Later, in a cleverly edited sequence skewering male vanity, Chip mistakes Needy's expression of terror for sexual rapture. Admittedly, this is the stuff of lurid adolescent distraction, not great cinema. "Jennifer's Body" is strictly a niche item but provides a goofy, campy bookend to "Drag Me to Hell" on the B-movie shelf. Watch it, forget it, move on.

• NFL plans to show blacked-out games online - September 10, 2009
The NFL, bracing for an uptick in TV blackouts this season, plans to use its website to rebroadcast those games on a delayed basis.Games that are blacked out in home-team markets will be shown air jordan shoes in their entirety for free on a delayed basis on NFL.com. The rebroadcasts will be available beginning at midnight on the day of the game and will remain on the site for 72 hours, except during "Monday Night Football" telecasts.
"We understand that the economy is limiting some wholesale watches families and corporations from buying as many game tickets as they had previously," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a written statement. "These free rebroadcasts on NFL.com will allow our fans that can't get to a blacked-out game an opportunity to see the entire game."

• Which Colleges Are Doing Their Job? - September 10, 2009
My column this week describes some Michael Jordan Shoes fascinating new research about why so many college students fail to graduate. The research is based on data that isn¡¯t publicly available. But there is plenty of college-by-college data available.
For starters, the Education Trust, a nonprofit group, has built an excellent database, called College Results Online, for comparing graduation rates at different colleges. I recommend starting here.
College Results Online doesn¡¯t yet have jewelry the last year¡¯s statistics. The Education Department ¡ª which receives the graduation-rate data from the college themselves and then publishes it ¡ª does have the most recent numbers here. Enter a college name, click on the college¡¯s listing and then click on ¡°Retention and graduation rates.¡± If you want to compare many schools, College Results Online is better. Graduation rates don¡¯t change much year to year.
Finally, Washington Monthly has recently released its new college ranking. It¡¯s based on several factors, one of which is a comparison between a college¡¯s graduation rate and the makeup of its student body. A college like South Air Jordan 18 Carolina State gets high marks because a college with so many low-income students would typically have a graduation rate of only 22 percent; South Carolina State¡¯s rate is 45 percent. Penn State¡¯s proportion of low-income students would make you expect it to have a graduation rate of 66 percent; instead, it¡¯s 84 percent. Many of the University of California campuses also look good by this measure.
Toward the bottom of the Air Jordan 23 ranking, the University of Louisville has an expected graduation rate of 59 percent and an actual rate of 44 percent. The University of Massachusetts, Boston, has an expected rate of 46 percent and an actual rate of 33 percent.
Kevin Carey, of the research group Education Sector, played a big role in creating both College Results Online and the Washington Monthly ranking.

• Murray Swept Out Of U.S. Open by Cilic - September 8, 2009
FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y., Sept. 8 -- Andy Murray had so much in his favor when he arrived in New York for the season's final major.
Though a fiercely proud Scot, Murray nike air force 1 has made a point of explaining, whenever he has been asked, that the U.S. Open is his favorite Grand Slam event -- a snub of sorts, or so it has been perceived, of Wimbledon's hallowed lawns.

It was a stunning result for the player pegged by several prognosticators as the challenger most likely to wrest the U.S. Open crown from Federer in Sunday's men's final.
And Murray offered little insight during his post-match remarks, saying what was painfully evident: "I played poorly."
Only the first set, which lasted 55 minutes, was competitive. Murray had four chances to break the 6-foot-6 Croat's big serve and converted Pittsburgh Steelers none.
After that, all semblance of life seemed to drain from the Scot, while Cilic, 20, who had failed to advance past the fourth round of a major in four previous attempts, elevated his game.
Murray was clearly addled by the swirling wind that seemed to conspire against him on key points. And his left wrist was NFL All Stan obviously bothering him, too, though he declined to elaborate or blame the loss on an injury.
"Regardless of my wrist, I lost the match," Murray said. "I returned poorly, and he served well. And that was really the difference."
There was actually more to it, of course.

• NBA preparing Twitter guidelines - September 8, 2009
Sports, the NBA is planning to provide guidelines for their players that are using the different social media outlets to communicate to fans.

NFL game officials are banned from using social media at all times.
¡°We just need to make sure when it¡¯s OK to Tweet and when it¡¯s not OK to Tweet so it at least focuses around the game,¡± [Stern] said. ¡°It would look unusual for a guy sitting on the bench to pick up his cell phone, and I think we can agree NFL All Stan that he probably shouldn¡¯t be writing e-mails. It¡¯s not about Twitter; it¡¯s about the line of communication. That¡¯s what we¡¯re focusing on.¡±
It¡¯s understandable why a team or a league would want their players to avoid ¡°tweeting¡± during business hours. They¡¯re being paid to do a job, not interact with fans. That said, Twitter is a social and marketing phenomenon, so when used correctly, it can enhance the fan¡¯s experience. There¡¯s no way for the league or team to filter a player¡¯s comments, so the restrictions make sense.
