• July 2, 2006 - Keeping your computer organised

Is your computer a mess? saved a thousand and one items and can't find any of them?

Your computer is only as efficient as you are, is all your paperwork neatly filed at home?

well then if it is you already know how to sort and organise, the principle is the same on computer as it is in a filing cabinet, you simply file each item in a file as you would in a filing cabinet, however it seems that a lot of people cannot apply the same principles to a computer as they do in their everyday life.

They simply download and save everything any and everywhere, on the desktop, in my documents in random files, and they hoard a million and one items they don't need, cluttering up their computer with useless information they don't need or want any more, in a location that they cannot find, as your computer gets overloaded with all this junk you no longer find it efficient to use as you spend mor and more time looking for an item, my suggestion is to clean it up organise everything in folders  so that you can instantly access the item you want in the folder you created here is a simple filing system for you to create, which should work for most people. follow the steps below.

  • Go to your my documents folder open it up now right click your mouse anywhere in your my documents foldergo to new and click folder, this will create a new folder name this folder with a label you can remember the same as you would name a folder in everyday life with your paperwork let's name the first folder correspondence, leave the folder closed now look around your my documents folder and drag any item that relates to correspondences you have had into this folder by draging it to the folder icon with your mouse and letting go of your mouse button when the folder changes colour after you have dragged the item to the folder, you can also drag many items at once by holding the control key down and selecting as many items as you like to go into this folder and dragging all of them at once. continue until all of your correspondence items are in your correspondence folder
  • Having done that, you can now continue cleaning up by creating other folders in your my documents folder such as say a bills folder, educational information folder, or any other  folder the principal is the same for all.
  • Do you need to separate your correspondence that you have just moved into the correspondence folder by name or any other category? simply open your new corrspondence folder that you have created and follow the same steps as before right click and create a new folder and name it.

This is all for todays blog I will continue with this topic in my next post.

• June 26, 2006 - Protect against spam and viruses

Latest news and reports for Klaus's Computer Services

Firstly apologies it's been a hectic week and I didn't get time to get online to write this as promised.

As I mentioned in my previous article, most of our clients that complain about spam mail, viruses, diallers and other problems with their computers only have themselcves to blame,

So I will reiterate here if you frequent adult sites and click the buttons that say click here now instant access no credit card needed, you are probably agreeing to and installing a very expensive dialler, as well as advertising that will continue to pop up on your screen.

If you use programs such as bearshare, as part of the installation you are agreeing to install other programs specifically designed for advertising, also if you are installing programs such as bearshare and kazaa you are establishing a direct connection peer to peer with another computer, in anyones home and opening a door for viruses as you have no idea whether the person that you are getting your free music from has virus protection, in fact some of the virus writers particularly target these programs as they are superfast at spreading viruses and causing major damage.

Frequenting hacker sites again, time and time again i have seen purported cracks, that are viruses and do damage, you are purposefully going to sites that specialise and doing damage cracking code, so why wouldn't the virus writers love those sites to spread their goodies.

Giving out your email address to every free opportunity you can find on the net is also a sure way to get huge amounts of spam, free is not free as explained previously.

Other ways to get viruses are chat programs such as MSN, YAHOO ETC .when you exchange files with persons, as well as opening emails that are from persons unknown.

Opening disks from friends etc that you haven't scanned for viruses.

So what can you do to avoid getting virus infections spam and other such things, get off the internet?

More and more we rely on the Internet and that is just not a possibility anymore for a lot of us, a lot of elderly and lonely persons also now rely on the internet for contact with the

outside world, or even contact with their children, many of our elderly clients, tell us that it is more likely they will get a reply if they send an email, than if they ring their kids, or using chat programs where they can interact with video and voice and again have instant communication, wich is not likely to happen by other means, and of course there is the considerable savings if your family is a long way away wether it be overseas or interstate. how much cheaper than free chat can you get.

So to protect yourself, keep in mind the following, don't click instant access buttons on Adult sites, don't open, emails from persons you don't know, don't download cracks for programs, buy legal programs instead, don't use free music share programs such as Kazaa, don't accept file transfers via chat programs.

Having said that, I know that a lot of persons will ignore wthat I have said, from personal experience wih our clients,  here are my suggestions so that you can at least minimise your risks while you are on line.

1.> follow the above suggestions

2.> get a  firewall

3.> get an  antivirus program and keep it uptodate with updating set it to auto update

4.> get a spam program as with antivirus and keep it updated

5.> get a legal copy of windows Xp if you are using it.and keep it updated.

Just an aside, Microsoft is continously blamed for everyone's woes, personally my opinion is that Microsoft provide an excellent service, time and again I keep telling my clients download updates to your windows operating systems and other Microsoft programs, time and again clients that don't download updates have the worst problems with their operating systems, but I will discuss this at another time.

I hope this article is helpfull to you and here are some links if you want to have a look at antivirus, spam and other software to protect yourself, yes you can buy from these links, and guess what if you do I will make small percentage, as I said before free is not free, i will give free advise, but I still need to pay my bills so if you buy something from these links you will be supporting this free advise.

Link one Security software including protection for children

Link two Antivirus and security software

Link three Spam Software

• June 20, 2006 - Spam mail and viruses protect yourself

Latest news reports for Klaus's Computer Services

Time and time again our clients bring in computers complaining of spam mail and virus infections, almost always the answer is we didn't do anything o get this email:

Fact is however that virtually always those with the worst spam mail problem and virus problems have caused their own problems, they blame everyone but themselves

The worst infected systems are those where the owners of the computers have visited, adult sites, hacker sites, and other sites trying to get freebies as in clicking on the free access sites in  the adult sites, downloading crack software and a host of other freebies, free toolbars and other things, kazaa and other freeby download sites also add to the problem.

When the client signed up to get free access to these services they had to give a valid email address in order to get access and there is where the problem starts, the operators of most of these sites need to make money to keep giving away free services, they wouldn't be operating their sites just because they think the world is full of great people that deserve to get everything for nothing, they are in the business of making money on the internet, in most instances when you sign up for a free account you also have to agree to receive email with partner offers, or install a particular additional piece of software with your free software and that is where your so called spam mail comes from, you agreed to get it, you asked for it because you wanted something for nothing, now the free providers are going to hound you with email so that you buy something of those emails and pay for the free services they provided.

Then there is the hacker sites where people go to get cracks to get the software they illegally obtained from some source, in a lot of instances when you downloaded the crack you also downloaded a hack from the author, as well some download code to change your browser page and get you to a page where again hopefully you will be convinced to buy somethinbg so that the hacker can make money.

Adult sites offer all sorts of instant access without a credit card, most of which are diallers that then dial a number for you to access the adult contact, only problem is these numbers are usually 1900 information numbers and you could be calling anywhere in the worls so you are paying long distance rates and on top of that the rate per minute can be anything from $2 to no limit, so your free instant access is making the provider of your adult service a fortune and unless you have heaps of cash you will receive a phone bill that is over the top and you won't be able to pay it.

The moral of the above is free is virtually never really free, free quiet often comes at a huge cost to you and it would have been simpler to protect yourself, by paying the correct price for the software in the first place.

Tomorrow how to protect yourself and get rid of unwanted spam, if you are already receiving lots of it, virus protection whats available.
