Ares is a free peer-to-peer filesharing program started as a closed source project in the middle of 2002. During its early days Ares used to connect to the Gnutella network. On december 15th 2002 Ares left Gnutella and switched to its new proprietary network. This new network is organized into leaves and supernodes and offers the advantage of a low bandwidth consumption.
