    In the past month, we have had a step forward and step backward in regards to magazines portraying a health and beauty body image. The November issue of Glamour magazine contains the Beautiful Bodies spread; a pictorial that contains seven plus-size models in the nude.

    Each model is interviewed and tells her story about experiences in the modeling industry. The majority of them reveal they used to have bad dieting habits and beauty secrets to be able to model at the industry’s normal standards, and they realized how harmful and damaging it was to their bodies.

    They are proud and confident to go back to a healthy weight, and still able to look and feel beautiful. The magazine has received a large amount of positive feedback on their model pic from their readers.

    Glamour has also released a statement saying they are committed to showing a wide range of body types and racial diversity in upcoming issues. It is great to see such a well-known and popular magazine stepping up and finally giving readers what they have been asking for: models and women who look more like them.

    Glamour has made a great decision and I hope they stick with their commitment. This past week, an ad for Ralph Lauren’s new fall collection became very controversial. The ad features a model so heavily airbrushed, her head is larger then her pelvis.

    Ralph Lauren has issued a statement saying they are taking responsibility for the problem, and taking precautions so that it will not happen again. The Lauren ad is so gross and alien-looking it is hard to believe that any girl would strive to look like that. Many top famous model dating with famous male models this is a part of galmour world.

    The need to airbrush an already horribly skinny girl to almost nothing is uncalled for. This does not make the clothing or the brand look any better. It is also interesting that Lauren decided not to withdraw or apologize for the image. The unfortunate aspect about this ad is girls will see this and believe they need to look this way.

    Because she is a model representing a major fashion label, and will be seen in many large fashion magazines, this will somehow give her credibility and validation that this is how women should look.

    We are making so much progress with healthy portrayals of models. Glamour is great for featuring averaged sized women in their pages, along with stories on the struggles of trying to maintain an unhealthy and unrealistic weight.

    I hope more leaders in the fashion industry take a lead from Glamour and learn from the mistakes of Ralph Lauren in regards to what people want to see in magazines and what will benefit everyone in the process of loving one’s bo. Kristin Scott Thomas' French Connection

The title of Kristin Scott Thomas' new film, Partir, translates as 'Leaving' in English. Which, considering the fireworks that ensued on director Catherine Corsini's set in Nimes, France, is entirely appropriate.In an interview today, Corsini said Thomas stormed off the set three times during the shoot, firing a volley of abusive invective at the director and others. Her first 'leaving' was actually on the first day of filming.

Their differences were always creative, Corsini explained.In the film, famous actresses Kristin Scott Thomas plays a 40-something wife and mother living an upper-middle-class existence, who falls madly in love with a Spanish labourer and gives up everything to be with him.

"Kristin thought the character would experience a greater sense of guilt in leaving her two children,'' said Corsini, who said she had long admired Thomas' work and wanted to make a film with her.

"Whereas for me the story is more about a woman so caught up in the emotion and the passion that she will sacrifice everything."On each occasion, Thomas returned to the set and, in Corsini's opinion, the tensions ultimately were positive.

Thomas, overlooked earlier this year by the Academy Awards for her riveting performance in I've Loved You So Long, said the film speaks to several themes that she finds compelling, including the notion that "your life as a woman does not end just because you're 35 or 45," and the fact that for all the gains that have been made, many women are still financially dependent on their husbands, trapped in bad marriages.

She said she loves coming to Toronto because "here it's a level playing field, vis-a-vis European and American films. Fight against Breast Cancer: 'Pink'

This time of year there's a line from the movie "Steel Magnolias" I can't shake.Famous Actress Sally Field, playing the mother of the bride, responds to her daughter's beauty shop declaration that pink is her "signature color." Mom, quite the sharp wit, tells gal pals dryly, "That sanctuary looks like it's been hosed down with Pepto-Bismol."That's how I see October.

Pink and ribbons first were tied with breast cancer in the early '90s. Several entities are credited with introducing the color as a soft way to draw attention to the grotesque illness, its large impact, and the dire need for research.

A fundraising phenomenon resulted. Millions have been raised thanks to the color's arrow-like precision. The feminine shade penetrates the hearts and minds of women, mainly, who've suffered, survived or certainly know someone who has done both - then surrendered.As a result pink is a full-blown obsession every year, with the color-specific cause linked to its October awareness month especially. Pink will appear in every imaginable place. Grassroots movements, corporate product pitches, advertisements and special events will soak in the hue.

Places in the Heart Sally Field won an Oscar for this fact-based portrayal of a Depression-era widow who will do whatever is necessary to keep her home.

The message: Breast cancer still kills; keep fighting.

The movement is beautiful. But it's also hurtful.

Sacrificed in the wake of such critical attention are the feelings of those who suffer and survive other cancers.

It's true. There are men and women who view impassioned pink displays with quiet disdain. Some harbor guilt over their jealousy pangs. They can't help but wonder, though, what about my cancer?

A daughter of a woman felled by lung cancer told me this once. She felt bad thinking it and wished no victim of breast cancer any harm or suffering.It's just that "no one seems to care about women like my mom."Parents of children suffering with rare cancers have expressed pain, as well. These kids are relative few, the research money limited, and clinical trials scant by comparison.

Guardians network with one another, discuss what nonprofits are giving to whom.

They are more apt to attack, because they know how resilient children are to treatments - if they exist. With just a little more money, a little more attention, maybe their kids would feel better, they say.

But the multitude of breast cancer causes and their pink-clad cheerleaders are not to blame.They have helped us realize how important early detection is, lobbied for better weapons of attack, and kept the beast responsible for maiming and killing women - and men - from maiming and killing scores more.

Breast cancer is being strangled into submission right now thanks to genius doctors and some of the planet's most dedicated and creative fundraisers. Their major discoveries could unlock additional medical mysteries, too.

That does not mean other impassioned advocates, challenged with far greater odds, should be ignored, however. It is up to us how cancers are pitched to the public and embraced. That includes the private and corporate entities annually hosing us down with pink.

Every cancer is sickening and thus worthy of Pepto-Bismol treatment.

Opening our hearts and creative marketing minds to more, rather than less initiatives, will make us all feel better.Pink might be linked to October. But cancer, every last bit of it, is colorblind all year.

Viola Szekely booted off Britain's Next Top Model

Another Britain's Next top model wannabe has bitten the dust on Living TV's.

Hungarian hopeful Csilla "Viola" Szekely became the latest contestant to get the boot, leaving just four girls in the running for the coveted title.

The 18-year-old was chucked off the catwalk during another trip abroad, this time to Argentina, where the girls hob-nobbed with the country's A-listers, sported polo fashion and did a TV advertisement for beef.

Viola, described as "terrible" by one of her fellow contestants when shooting the commercial, said the bitching hasn't put her off.

She said: "I've been contacted by models agency and I'm doing test shoots."

Viola said that of the remaining contestants - Jade McSorley, Ashley Brown, Sophie Sumner and Mecia Simone Simpson - she hopes Jade will walk away with the title.

The Worlds Unbeaten Male Models

In 2006, Sean O'Pry was like any other 17-year-old kid, attending high school in Kennesaw, Ga., and tinkering with his MySpace page in his spare time. What was not so normal was what happened after the photos on O'Pry's page caught the attention of New York modeling agency VNY Models. VNY owner Lana Winters personally phoned O'Pry's mother to get her permission to fly Sean to the Big Apple, and within three days he had landed a major ad campaign.

"He came here with a little suitcase, not knowing what to expect and basically became a star overnight," says Winters. "I've been in this business for a very, very long time and I've never seen anybody get such a response."

In the two-and-a-half years since, the now 19-year-old O'Pry has nabbed some of the most prized campaigns for designers from Calvin Klein to Armani and was named GQ Style's 2007 "Man for the Season." All that acclaim makes O'Pry Forbes' most successful male model this year.

To compile our rankings, we looked at the most prominent male models' work over the past two years, counting magazine covers and spreads, advertising campaigns, contracts and runway shows.

O'Pry's success makes for a great story, but it's the exception to the rule in the female-dominated world of high fashion. A top male model may take home anywhere from $200,000 to $500,000 annually, but most make a less glamorous living from catalog work. Now, thanks to the recession, advertisers are shortening photo shoots and renewing older contracts to save money. They're also narrowing the types of men they feature.

"In times of economic downturn, there's an automatic reversal to a more classic look," says Gene Kogan, co-director of the men's division at DNA Model Management. "During those times, clients, designers and department stores need to speak directly to the consumers."

That traditional aesthetic bodes well for the classically handsome Garrett Neff, who broke into our top 10 this year at No. 5. Already the face of Calvin Klein Jeans and Man fragrance, Neff followed in the footsteps of Mark Wahlberg, David Beckham and actor Djimon Hounsou last fall when he was named the brand's newest underwear model.

Another success story is swarthy Brit David Gandy, who has graced billboards for Dolce & Gabbana's Light Blue fragrance and commands rates rivaling those of some female models. "[Gandy] is still one of the few guys that we can really say 'no, we're not taking that [offer],'" says Kogan, "and the clients pay."

On the opposite end of the spectrum, models Tyler Riggs and Cole Mohr defy traditional standards of male beauty with visible tattoos and thin, angular frames favored for more artsy magazine spreads. "They're image guys, and they're trendy," says Kogan. "But once people know them and have used them, they tend to fall off." Still, he adds, "That's not to say that [they] don't work; we have plenty of great editorial image guys that are doing tremendously well."

Since the fashion industry operates on budgets gleaned from the previous season's numbers, it's roughly six months behind the rest of the economy, so we may have to wait longer for real changes to hit.

The best bets for male models today? Campaigns for beauty products and nonseasonal fashion items that offer more staying power than the mercurial apparel category. Especially coveted are fragrance contracts, which can last upward of three years. "Once a model is branded to a certain fragrance, they're not going to do too many after that, so they really try to get as much money out of the client as possible," says VNY's Lana Winters. "[The client] really understands that and that's why they pay so much."

Recession or not, there will never be a shortage of ambitious young models waiting to be discovered, or of agents with their eyes peeled for the next Sean O'Pry. "I go to Disneyland and I'm scouting like crazy!" says Winters. "I don't even know what's going on in Disneyland because I'm just looking for people."
