Steps Success for Teen Modeling photographer and Food ConsciousI saw a rerun of Australia’s Next Top Model (cycle 3) today and in this particular episode the judges chided one of the contestants for gaining a little bit of weight and not watching what she was foods eating. They tried to word it that she should be taking care of her body but I’m pretty sure it spelled out that they didn’t want her to be fat. I felt so bad because the teen modeling model started crying and all the other model contestants were standing there. This girl was so young, and I can’t imagine how embarrassed and humiliated she felt. When you’re young, the fixation on body image is so strong. And having someone call you out on international TV for eating too much? I wonder if she decided to stop eating all together afterward. I mean, I guess looking from the other side, what can you expect from judges who are part of a model photographer modeling competition? But really, you would think with all the eating disorders and girls with unhealthy body images model photographer watching this show, that that kind of talk should be reserved for behind the scenes. The girl who was gaining weight wasn’t even foods fat. She was average or below average in size, so think of the impact that has on all the little girls who still have baby fat and are a bit bigger than her who were watching the show? They probably thought to themselves that they, too, are not taking care of their bodies and lord knows what other thoughts crossed their minds. What do you think? Did this hopeful model, who I think was still a teenager, deserve to be publicly embarrassed about her eating habits because that’s what happens in the modeling world? Is this something that’s OK in today’s society when eating disorders and body image concerns run rampant in girls’ minds? Or should the Next Top Model producers on all continents think twice before allowing that?
